How to choose payroll software in Mauritius: a buyer's checklist

What a Mauritian business should check before buying payroll and attendance software: MRA files, statutory updates, attendance devices, security, support and price.

A spreadsheet works until the day it doesn’t: a rate changes, a formula is overwritten, the person who built it leaves. Moving to payroll software is the usual next step, but not all software is built for Mauritius. Use this checklist before you choose.

1. Is it built for Mauritian payroll?

  • PAYE, CSG, NSF, Training Levy and PRGF worked out correctly, with the Employee Declaration Form deductions.
  • The end-of-year bonus, leave and overtime rules of the Workers’ Rights Act.
  • Files in the layout the MRA asks for, so you upload instead of retyping.

2. Who keeps the rates up to date?

Rates change. Ask whether the provider updates them for everyone, with an effective date, or whether you must edit them yourself. Old payslips should always reproduce with the rates that applied at the time.

3. Does it connect to real attendance?

Payroll is only as good as the hours behind it. Look for fingerprint and face terminals, cards, QR codes and a phone app, one place for all records, and a clear audit trail when someone corrects a punch.

4. Can your employees use it?

An employee app for clock-in, payslips and leave requests removes a large share of the questions that land on the payroll officer. Check it works on the phones your staff really have, in the languages they use.

5. Security and control

  • Separate roles, so the person who enters time cannot approve payroll.
  • A log of who changed what and when.
  • Locked payroll after approval, and your data kept separate from every other customer’s.

6. Support you can reach

Payroll deadlines do not move. Check support hours, languages (English and French at the least) and how you reach a person.

7. Price that is simple

Prefer a price based on the size of your team, with every feature included, over a long list of modules and per-feature charges. Ask about set-up fees and what happens if your headcount grows.
